sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a very common breathing disorder during sleep. This disorder is characterized by pauses in breathing or instances of shallow or infrequent breathing during sleep. Each pause in breathing can last 10-15 seconds or longer and can occur repeatedly for more than 10 times an hour. As a result, not enough oxygen reaches the brain and the rest of the body.
The most common form of sleep apnea is the Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which is caused by a physical block to airflow, usually due to the compression of the soft tissues at the back of the during sleep.
Another form of sleep apnea is the Central Sleep Apnea (CSA). In CSA breathing is interrupted because the brain fails to activate respiratory effort to the muscles, due to instability in the respiratory control center and not because the airflows are blocked like in OSA.
OSA treatment for obese patients is automatically achieved by weight loss. In case that the patient is unable to lose the excess weight or the disorder is very severe and doesn’t allow the waiting period for the weight loss, then we use the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure devices (CPAP), auto-CPAP.
CSA treatment is only achieved by respiratory support during sleep with more complicated devices, the servo-ventilators.
