stoma care
A stoma is a surgically created opening which connects an organ to the outside environment. There are several forms of an artificial stoma, most of which are created to allow the removal of feces out of the body through the abdominal wall. The forms of an artificial stoma are the following :
a. Colostomy is created when a portion of the large intestine is bypassed. It may be reversible or irreversible.
b. Ileostomy is a relevant bypass of the ileum, i.e. the end or loop of the small intestine.
c. Diversion of the flow of urine (Ureterostomy) concerns all surgical procedures during which new artificial outlets out of the body are created. They are performed when the bladder or some other organ of the urinary system must be removed or bypassed.
In the aforementioned forms of an artificial stoma, i.e. a stoma created after surgical procedures, an ostomy pouching system (colostomy bag) is attached to collect all the waste for the best service and physical facilitation of the patients. There are one-piece or two-piece ostomy pouching systems and the attending physician decides on the most appropriate choice according to the patient’s needs.
